Today, many communities face flooding challenges that threaten neighborhoods and sometimes even the viability of the entire community. These challenges are a result of decisions made in the past on how the community was developed intersecting with changing environmental conditions such as sea level rise and intensifying precipitation.
Most communities have limited capacity to finance and manage new projects. This limited capacity only adds to the challenges that need to be overcome to solve these problems. My goal is to help provide expert capacity to help communities develop projects that address these challenges.
I believe that these challenges are actually an opportunity for most communities. The opportunity is to take advantage of state and federal funding programs by tailoring projects to best fit available funding while still meeting overall project goals. The advantage of this approach is not only maximizing potential external funding opportunity for a project, it also leads to projects that create "co-benefits" for a community beyond simply solving an engineering problem.
This approach multiplies the value of a state/federal grant for a community by creating more than just an engineering solution. Incorporating community-based assets into a project will not only maximize funding opportunities, it will also build public support for the project and often will result in a more cost-effective project.
